The Angelmakers
In Nagyrév, a Hungarian village with a history of women poisoning their husbands and relatives, the past has never quite settled. Residents tell different versions of what happened. Accounts of violence sit alongside marriage, village gossip and everyday routines. Humour repeatedly interrupts the horror.

The murders emerged into public view in 1929. Decades later, accounts passed between generations still shape how the village talks about marriage, violence and women’s lives.
Bussink films these conversations at kitchen tables, outside houses and on the ferry. Memories of the killings share space with ordinary complaints about village life. Made during her film studies in Edinburgh, in collaboration with the Budapest film school, The Angelmakers received IDFA’s First Appearance Award in 2005.
