& labs
I teach documentary directing at the Netherlands Film Academy, where I joined the teaching staff in May 2020. My work includes research, filming exercises, discussions of edited material and supervision of graduation films.
Learning through making
We work with an interview, a filmed encounter, a scene or a first assembly. Watching material together makes directing decisions concrete: where the camera stands, when a question helps, what makes a scene, and what changes when two shots are put together.
In Film & Ethics, students start with a dilemma from a film plan. They formulate it individually, sharpen it in pairs, then discuss possible decisions and their consequences. The question has to be specific enough to act on.
A film develops through versions
Plans, shoots and cuts are discussed in relation to one another. What did the research promise? What happened during filming? What has appeared in the material that was absent from the plan? Students learn to recognise and work with those changes.
Labs & mentoring
I also coach filmmakers outside the Academy. At DOCvillage, project development takes place through individual consultations, group discussion and practical exercises. Earlier tutor roles include IDFAcademy Summer School, Kids & Docs and the Mediafonds Transmedia Masterclass.
DOCvillage 2026
5–9 October, Sittard. A five-day documentary residency with CineSud. I am one of the coaches, alongside John Appel and Martijn Blekendaal. The programme combines project work, group sessions and individual coaching.

Editorial & advisory work
I have advised documentary projects for the Mediafonds and NPO-fonds. From 2017 to January 2020, I was a commissioning editor at VPRO. These institutional roles sit alongside my independent collaborations with filmmakers.
A workshop or project session
Tell me who is taking part, what they are making and how much time is available. A session can focus on research, interviewing, scenes, an edit or the ethical decisions within a project.
