I work with directors, editors and producers on documentary projects, from the first film plan to the edit. Sometimes that means finding the situations to film. Sometimes it means watching a cut together and testing what happens when a scene moves, a voice-over goes, or the point of view changes.
Before & during filming
In development, I read plans and watch research material. We discuss access, the filmmaker’s position and the people and situations that could carry the film. During production, we can return to that discussion with footage on the table and the next shoot ahead.
In the edit
I watch the cut and discuss it with the director and editor, including the versions they have already tried. We work on structure, perspective and rhythm through specific alternatives: a different opening, another order of scenes, or material worth bringing back.
Working together
A consultation includes preparation, a two-hour online session and a written report. The director can join alone or with the editor and producer. Longer collaborations can follow successive plans, shoots and cuts.
